NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Samford women's basketball team shot just 20.8 percent from the floor in falling to UTEP, 46-33 Thursday night in the first round of the Tulane Classic at Fogelman Arena.
With the loss, Samford falls to 6-7 on the season. The Bulldogs will play Troy in the consolation game of the tournament Friday at 1 p.m. The game will mark the second time in less than a week the two teams have met, as Samford defeated Troy, 80-73 last Sunday in the Pete Hanna Center. UTEP will take on Tulane in the championship game at 3 p.m.
In the loss, Samford was led by
Hannah Nichols with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Cassidy Williams scored seven points, while Charity Brown and Olivia Crozier added five points each.
UTEP was led by Najala Howell with 12 points and eight rebounds. Roeshonda Patterson and Zuzanna Puc added eight points each for the Miners.
Both teams were cold in the first half, as UTEP held a 9-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter, and the Miners were up, 19-9 at halftime.
UTEP opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run to push its lead to 29-9 with 6:52 left in the period. The Miners pushed their lead out to as many as 24 points at 42-18 at the close of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, after UTEP pushed its lead to 26 points at 44-18, Samford went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 18 points at 44-26 with 4:42 to go after a layup by Nichols. With UTEP leading, 46-27, Samford closed the game with a 6-0 run to make the final score 46-33.
