Slow Start Dooms Women's Basketball In Loss At UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford women's basketball team shot 39.2 percent from the floor, while UAB made 53.4 percent of its shots as the Blazers took a 77-53 win over the Bulldogs Thursday evening at Bartow Arena.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 3-6 on the young season. UAB improves to 7-1 with the win.
 
For Samford in the loss, Hannah Nichols scored 16 points. Makaila Woolard scored 10 points, while Samantha Fitzgerald and Raven Omar added seven points each for the Bulldogs.
 
UAB was led by Miyah Barnes with 14 points. Rachael Childress had 13 points, Deanna Kuzmanic scored 11 points and Katelynn Thomas added 10 points for the Blazers.
 
UAB raced out to a 15-0 lead with 4:23 left in the first quarter after a layup by Kara Rawls. The Blazers led by as many as 17 points in the first quarter at 19-2, and UAB held a 23-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Samford fought back to cut the lead to 29-20 with 4:54 to go before halftime after a jumper by Nichols. UAB, however, closed the quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 39-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, Samford cut the lead to 15 points at 41-26 and 43-28, but the Blazers went on a 6-0 run to push the lead to 21 points at 49-28 with 3:35 left in the period. UAB held a 54-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.
 
Samford cut the lead to 15 points at 56-41 with 9:01 to play in the game, but UAB went on a 13-3 run to take a 69-44 lead with 4:04 left. UAB led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter at 75-49 with 2:31 to play, and the Blazers came away with a 77-53 win.  
 
Samford will return to action when the Bulldogs host Auburn-Montgomery Saturday afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center and admission is FREE.
