BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University track and field teams will compete in their first meet of the 2017 outdoor season Friday as the Bulldogs are hosting the Samford Alabama Track Challenge at the Samford Track and Soccer Complex. The one-day, five-team event will feature some of the best track and field athletes, not only in Alabama, but also in the nation.

The field events are slated to begin at noon (CT), while the running competitions are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.

The men's teams competing in Friday's event will be Samford, South Alabama and Troy. The women's side will include the aforementioned squads, as well as Miles College and UAB.

Competing for Samford in the men's competition will be the following student-athletes: Owen Bailey, Marquis Barnes, Austin Billings, Shelby Campbell, Caleb Carter, Brad Cheek, Dillon Dean, Hugh Duggan, Keyth Fightmaster, Gavin Gautreau, Arsène Guillorel, Brandon Hazouri, Jonathan Helton, Carson Howe, Andrew Jaeger, Javion Lee, Will Nichols, Tray Oates, Jordan Oballe, Drew Patterson, Michael Rohdy, Josh Salter, Hunter Schlatter, Brian Smith, Dominic Smith, Jr., Emmanuel Tait, Chris Thrasher, Jay Vines and Jonathan Waarvik.

The following Samford women will also be competing Friday: Ansley Bates, Lauren Beard, Hannah Belcher, Camille Caldwell, Abbie Cutcliffe, Rachel Dixon, Emily Eustace, Sarah Fairchild, Emma Garner, Erin Hines, Aerial Horton, Maggie Johnston, Lindsey Kessler, Charlotte Krause, Sarah Lee, Anna Long, Shian Mallory, Tonia McKinley, Megan Meadow, Carrie Neill, Qiona Payton, Bekah Pfitzer, Tiana Pisoni, Selena Popp, Courtney Prengaman, Megan Roach, Tatiana Taylor, Lauren Torsch, Presley Weems, Kaitlin West and Victoria Wicks.

The Samford track and field programs enters the 2017 outdoor season with a tremendous amount of momentum.

Less than two weeks ago, the Bulldogs' Karisa Nelson became the school's first NCAA Division I national champion as she posted a thrilling title run of 4:31.24 in the women's mile at the 2017 NCAA Indoor National Championships.

Additionally, Samford's Oates earned All-America status with an eighth-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 5.45 meters at the NCAA National Championships held at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Nelson's and Oates' finishes capped off a brilliant performance from the Samford men's and women's track and field teams in the indoor season. Earlier this year, the Bulldog women earned their second straight Southern Conference championship, while the men's squad finished second.
