CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Samford softball team swept a Southern Conference doubleheader at Chattanooga Saturday, winning the games by scores of 4-3 and 5-0 at Frost Stadium.
In game one for Samford, Kelsey Royalty went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Abbie Miranda also drove in a run for Samford in the first-game win.
Grey Adams (6-9) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford. Jessica Stone tossed the final 2.0 innings to pick up her first save of the season.
For Chattanooga in the first game, Brook Womack went 2-for-3 with two home runs and two RBI. Celie Hudson (2-2) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits in taking the loss in the circle for the Mocs.
Chattanooga jumped on top first with a run on a solo homer by Womack in the bottom of the second inning. Samford, however, bounced back with two runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead for good. Royalty scored Samford's first run of the inning on an error. Miranda later singled to center field to drive in Shelby Maze for a 2-1 Samford lead.
The Bulldogs added to their lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 4-1. Royal homered to left field with Lexie Higgins on base for a three-run Samford lead.
Chattanooga's Womack hit her second home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 4-2. The Mocs plated one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 4-3. Samford, however, held Chattanooga scoreless the rest of the way to hold on for the one-run win.
In the second game for Samford, Kathryn Jackson went 2-for-2 with her first career home run and an RBI. Hannah Trombley also homered, driving in two runs in a 1-for-1 performance.
Stone (6-4) earned the win in the circle for Samford in the second game. She pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on four hits.
Chattanooga was led in game two by Hayleigh Weissenbach, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Alex Connell (1-10) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on three hits to take the loss for the Mocs.
Samford took control of the game early, plating three runs in the top of the second inning. Trombley homered to left field with Miranda on base for the first two runs of the game. Jackson followed with a solo home run to left-center field for a 3-0 Samford lead.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to push their lead to 5-0. Higgins singled to drive in pinch-runner Rebecca Leonard for the first run of the inning. Royalty later singled to drive in Jackson for the game's final run.
With the sweep, Samford improves to 13-24 overall and 3-2 in Southern Conference play. Chattanooga falls to 11-24 overall and 1-4 in league games.
