Softball Takes Final Game At UNCG, 5-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Samford softball team earned a 5-2 victory in the final game of its Southern Conference series at UNC Greensboro Saturday.

In the win, Samford was led at the plate by Whitney Hinton, going 3-for-4. Shelby Maze was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win. Kelsey Royalty and Kathryn Jackson drove in a run each for the Bulldogs. Abby Sweeney was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Grey Adams (8-11) earned the win in the circle for the Bulldogs. She pitched 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out five batters.

For UNCG in Saturday's game, Marisa Sholtes went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Alicia Bazonski (15-11) took the loss in the circle, tossing 2.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits for the Spartans.

Samford jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Hinton scored on a wild pitch, and Maze came in on an error during the play. Jackson then singled to drive in Abbie Miranda for a 3-0 Samford lead.

UNCG came back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Samford lead to 3-2. Sholtes singled to drive in Alexis Overdiep and Jasmine Palmer to bring the Spartans to within one run.

Samford added a run in the top of the second inning to push its lead to 4-2. Maze singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Madison Couch for Samford's fourth run of the game.

The Bulldogs plated another run in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 5-2. Royalty singled to left field to drive in Sweeney for a three-run Samford advantage.

With the win, Samford improves to 19-27 overall and 7-5 in SoCon play. UNCG's record is now 23-18 overall and 6-3 in league games.

Samford will play at cross-town rival UAB Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
