Late Grand Slam Dooms Softball In Loss At WCU

CULLOWHEE, N.C. –
A sixth-inning grand slam by Western Carolina's Madison Armstrong lifted the Catamount softball team to an 8-6 win over Samford in the regular-season finale for both teams Sunday at the Catamount Softball Complex.

With the loss, Samford falls to 22-34 overall and 10-8 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs have earned the No. 4 seed for the SoCon Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Bulldogs will take on the No. 5 seed Mercer Wednesday at 9 a.m. (CT). To see the full bracket for the tournament, click here: SOCON TOURNAMENT BRACKET.

Western Carolina improves to 17-28 overall and 6-11 in league play. The sixth-seeded Catamounts will take on the third-seeded ETSU Bucs Wednesday at 2 p.m. (CT).

Samford was led in the game by Kelsey Royalty, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Shelby Maze and Lexie Higgins drove in a run each in the game. Taylor DeCelles (2-9) pitched the final inning, giving up six runs on five hits to take the loss in the circle.

Western Carolina was led by Armstrong, going 2-for-4 with the grand slam and five RBI. Ashlyn Long and Abigail Daniels had two hits and an RBI each. Courtney Buchanan also drove in a run for the Catamounts. Kinsey Liscio (2-5) tossed 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits to earn the win.

Samford jumped out to an early lead with one run in the top of the first inning. Maze reached base on an error to lead the inning off. Maze later scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 Samford lead.

Western Carolina came back to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Armstrong singled to center field to drive in Long to knot the score at 1-1.

The Bulldogs took the lead again when Royalty hit a solo home run to right-center field to give Samford a 2-1 advantage. Samford added to its lead with two runs in the third inning. Higgins and Royalty were both walked with the bases loaded to make the score 4-1.

Western Carolina came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single by Courtney Buchanan to cut the Samford lead to 4-2. Samford then added two runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 6-2. Royalty and Maze drove in a run each in the inning for Samford.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Western Carolina's Long and Daniels drove in a run each to cut the lead to 6-4. Armstrong then hit her grand slam to put the Catamounts up for good at 8-6.
