BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Samford University soccer team received an early goal from senior forward
Jermaine Seoposenwe and used a brilliant defensive performance to record at 1-0 road victory against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Sunday in a key non-conference showdown held at the WKU Soccer Complex.
Â
With the victory,
Samford (2-5-1) earned its first road win of the season and opened its five-match visiting stretch in impressive fashion. The Bulldogs' next four matches will be played at UC Davis, Saint Mary's (CA), Western Carolina and ETSU.
Â
Western Kentucky (3-4-0) finished the weekend with an 0-2 home record. On Friday, the Hilltoppers came up short in a similar 1-0 loss to Vanderbilt.
Â
Seoposenwe's game-winning goal, the school-record 31
st of her career, occurred at exactly 5:59 into the match and was set up by
Kaitlyn Orman on a corner kick. Orman, Samford's talented redshirt junior, lofted a high, perfectly-placed ball into the box where Seoposenwe skied high to head into the back of the net.
Â
Orman's assist proved to be her first of the season, while Seoposenwe's goal was her team-leading fifth.
Â
The Bulldogs outshot Western Kentucky, 16-6, and out-tallied the Hilltoppers in shots on goal, 8-2. Samford goalkeeper
Anna Maddox finished with two saves and earned her first complete-game shutout of the season.
Â
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 6Â p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin a two-match California road swing against the UC Davis Aggies. The game will be held at the Aggie Soccer Field in Davis, California, which is located just a bit northwest of the Bay Area.
