BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Samford University volleyball team turned in a hard-fought performance against the FGCU Eagles on Friday, but came up short, 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 20-25), in the opening match of competition at the 2017 Hoosier Classic, which is being hosted this weekend by Indiana University at University Gym.

Samford (3-9) played tight with
FGCU (6-4) in each set, but couldn't find the final push to take a frame from the Eagles.

Friday's match proved to be the Bulldogs' lone contest of the day. Samford will face both
Indiana (9-0) and
UNLV (4-6) on Saturday. The Bulldogs are slated to play the Hoosiers at 11 a.m., and the Rebels at 4 p.m., on the final day of the four-team weekend competition.

Samford's attack was paced by junior outside hitter
Krista Boesing. She finished the contest with a game-high 15 kills and earned a .345 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs' true freshman
Kendal Strand added eight kills, while
Shayla Phillip and
Kelsi Hobbs both finished with six apiece.

Sophomore
Grace Tiesman led Samford with 11 digs in the outing. Tiesman, the Bulldogs' talented native of Wheaton, Illinois, has already registered a squad-high 148 digs this year. Samford's
Taylor Anderton led all competitors with 33 assists.

FGCU finished the match with 10 service aces and only five service errors, while the Bulldogs committed 12 service errors and tallied five service aces.

On Saturday, Samford will face the homestanding Indiana Hoosiers at 11 a.m., as well as the UNLV Rebels at 4 p.m.

Following this weekend's 2017 Hoosier Classic, the Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin Southern Conference play at home against The Citadel Bulldog in a highly-anticipated matchup to be held at the Pete Hanna Center.
