MORAGA, Calif. -- The Samford University soccer team registered its third straight shutout victory Sunday as the Bulldogs used a stifling defense performance and an early penalty-kick goal from senior
Jermaine Seoposenwe to knock off the Saint Mary's (CA) Gaels, 1-0, in a key non-conference contest held at Saint Mary's Stadium.
Â
With the win,
Samford (4-5-1) extended its undefeated streak to four consecutive matches and posted its third straight shutout victory. Since playing to a thrilling 1-1 home draw with Georgia on Sept. 8, the Bulldogs have rattled off identical 1-0 road wins against Western Kentucky, UC Davis and
Saint Mary's (3-6-0).
Â
Seoposenwe's game-winning goal, her team-leading sixth of the season, occurred in the 16
th minute of play Sunday. After being fouled in the box, Samford was awarded with a penalty kick and Seoposenwe sent a perfectly-placed attempt into the bottom left corner of the net.
Â
At exactly 15:02 into the match, Seoposenwe's goal gave the Bulldogs an early 1-0 advantage and it proved to be all that Samford needed for the victory.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Anna Maddox posted her third straight shutout Sunday. The Bulldogs' All-Southern Conference performer from Warner Robins, Georgia, tallied a match-high five saves against Saint Mary's and played a huge role in the team's victory.
Â
Maddox hasn't allowed a goal in over 369 minutes of game action.
Â
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin SoCon play on the road against the Western Carolina Catamounts in a highly-anticipated matchup to be held at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
