CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Samford University basketball team's road woes continued Wednesday as the Bulldogs were defeated by the Chattanooga Mocs, 78-71, at The McKenzie Arena to fall to 1-11 in away games this season.

Samford (7-14, 3-5 SoCon) only shot 25.8 percent from the field in the first half and trailed
Chattanooga (7-14, 1-7 SoCon), 37-22, at the intermission.

The Bulldogs'
Demetrius Denzel-Dyson took over in the second stanza and scored 22 of his game-high 27 points in the final half of action.

Behind Samford's pressing defense and offensive adjustments, the Bulldogs trimmed the Mocs' advantage down to two points, 71-69, following Denzel-Dyson's game-high fifth 3-point basket of the contest with 2:57 left to play.

Samford, which trailed by 19 points, 43-24, at the 16:57 mark in the second half, found itself right back in the game down the stretch.

The Bulldogs' rally was spurred by Denzel-Dyson's hot shooting as well as forcing Chattanooga into 22 turnovers on 11 steals. Samford outscored the Mocs, 19-13, in points off turnovers.

In the final minutes of action, the Bulldogs' Sharkey missed a jumper and then Chattanooga's Rodney Chatman answered with five straight points to extend the Mocs' lead to 76-69 with 25 seconds remaining in the game.

The teams then traded buckets in the final seconds to make the final score 78-71.

Chatman closed out the game with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in the contest, while Makinde London stole the show for Chattanooga with 21 points and 19 rebounds off the bench. Nat Dixon also added 21 points for the Mocs and Makale Foreman chipped in with 13.

Along with Denzel-Dyson's season-high 27 points, Samford received 11 points and seven rebounds from senior center
Eric Adams, as well as 10 points from
Alex Thompson. Junior point guard
Justin Coleman, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, proved to be the focal point of Chattanooga's defensive scheme Wednesday, but still contributed with nine points, six assists and two rebounds.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs return home to Birmingham, Alabama, for a midseason league showdown against the second-place UNCG Spartans to be held in the Pete Hanna Center.
