BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford senior quarterback
Devlin Hodges broke or tied six school and two Southern Conference records in leading the Bulldog football team to a 66-28 win over Western Carolina Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.
Hodges set or tied school records for passing yards, total yards, touchdown passes, touchdowns responsible for, completions and consecutive games with a touchdown pass. He set SoCon records for passing yards and total yards in a game. A breakdown of the records Hodges and the team broke or tied today, along with notes is listed at the bottom of this page.
On the first play from scrimmage, WCU's Connell Young fumbled the ball and Samford's
Ahmad Gooden recovered at the Catamount 24-yard line. Two plays later, Hodges hit
Jai'Rus Creamer for a 26-yard touchdown to give the Bulldogs the early 7-0 lead with 14:25 to go in the first quarter.
On Western Carolina's next possession, Samford's
Tre'Shun Floyd recovered a WCU fumble at the Western Carolina 35-yard line. Three plays later, Hodges connected with
Andrew Harris for a 23-yard touchdown for a 14-0 Samford lead with 12:00 left in the first quarter.
Hodges connected with
Robert Adams for a 16-yard touchdown with 9:02 left in the first quarter to push Samford's lead to 21-0. Hodges scored on a 19-yard run to make the score 28-0 with 7:29 remaining in the open period. Hodges then hit
Torrence Pollard for a 32-yard touchdown to push the Bulldogs' lead to 35-0 with 4:59 left in the first quarter.
Western Carolina got on the scoreboard when Will Jones scored on a 26-yard run to cut the Samford lead to 35-7 with 11:03 left in the second quarter. Samford's
Roland Adams scored on a three-yard run to make the score 42-7 with 8:42 to go in the second quarter. Western Carolina added two touchdowns before halftime. The first came when Corey Holloway scored on a one-yard run with 2:29 to go, and then Jones hit Owen Cosenke for a 21-yard touchdown with 38 seconds to go to make the score 42-21 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Samford started the second-half scoring when Hodges hit
Yassar El-Amin for a 68-yard touchdown to make the score 49-21 with 8:07 left in the third quarter.
Roland Adams scored on a three-yard pass from Hodges to push the lead to 56-21 with 1:28 to go in the third quarter.
WCU's Kenny Benton scored on a three-yard run with 14:54 left in the game to cut the lead to 56-28. Samford's
Mitchell Fineran kicked a 40-yard field goal to push the lead to 59-28 with 13:03 left in the game.
DeMarcus Ware wrapped up the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run with 2:43 to go to make the final score 66-28.
Samford will play host to VMI next Saturday, Oct. 13. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start from Seibert Stadium.
POST-GAME NOTES
- Devlin Hodges finished with 562 passing yards after going 44-of-60 with six touchdowns in the Samford win over WCU. He accounted 586 total yards after adding 24 rushing yards on eight carries with one touchdown.
- The 562 passing yards and the 586 total yards sets new Samford and Southern Conference records. His 562 passing yards is also the most yards through the air in the FCS this season coming into the weekend. His seven total touchdowns sets a new school record in touchdowns responsible for, breaking the record shared by Jimbo Fisher and Jim Lovette, and ranking third in SoCon history. His six touchdown passes ties Fisher's record set in 1987.
- His 44 completions tied the Samford record for completions in a single-game.
- Hodges has thrown a touchdown pass in 19-straight games setting a new school record and is four games away from breaking the SoCon Record.
- As a team the Bulldogs set the school record for points in a SoCon game with 66.
- Jai'Rus Creamer finished with a career-high 101 receiving on nine catches with one touchdown.
- Kelvin McKnight led all receivers in the game with 138 yards on eight catches.
- Torrence Pollard caught a 32-yard touchdown pass for his first career reception. He finished with three catches for 54 yards and the one TD.
