BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University basketball team turned in its highest offensive output of the 2017-18 season Saturday as the Bulldogs exploded for a demonstrative 116-103 home victory against The Citadel Bulldogs in a Southern Conference shootout held at the Pete Hanna Center.

Samford (9-18, 5-9 SoCon) finished the contest with six players scoring in double figures as
Alex Thompson,
Demetrius Denzel-Dyson,
Eric Adams,
Justin Coleman,
Kevion Nolan and
Josh Sharkey all turned in strong offensive performances.

Additionally, junior forward
Stefan Lakic nearly reached the double-digit mark as well with nine points and four rebounds in just 14 minutes of play.

Thompson proved to be nearly perfect from the field Saturday. The Bulldogs' senior forward from Dothan, turned in a 10-of-11 performance from the floor and also added nine rebounds and an assist.

Fellow senior Denzel-Dyson followed with 20 points and eight rebounds against
The Citadel (9-16, 4-9 SoCon).

Samford's leading scorer with an average of 15.1 points per game this season, Denzel-Dyson moved just 12 points shy of reaching the prestigious 1,000-point plateau. When he achieves the feat, Denzel-Dyson will become only the third player in school history to reach the mark in his first two seasons.

Samford's Adams posted 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal against The Citadel on Saturday. The Bulldogs' hard-working native of Hoover, logged 27 minutes of playing time and shot 6-of-9 from the field.

Coleman tied his school record of 13 assists for a second time this season. Samford's point guard leads the SoCon in assists this year and added 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor, including a 4-of-7 performance from long range.

The Bulldogs' Nolan and Sharkey both scored 12 points apiece and combined to shoot 7-of-13 from the field. Sharkey, who ranks second in the SoCon in assists this season, handed out seven Saturday and added a trio of steals.

Samford scored a season-high 62 points in the first half. The Bulldogs shot a sizzling 67.8 percent from the field in the game, as well as a 64-percent tally from beyond the arc. Samford finished 16-of-25 from 3-point range.

The Citadel's Zane Najdawi, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, scored a game-high 33 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field.

Samford outrebounded The Citadel, 37-27, and outscored the Cadets, 18-7, in fast-break points.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 8-4 when playing at home this season.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Monday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs continue their three-game SoCon homestand against the Mercer Bears in a pivotal league contest to be held at the Pete Hanna Center.
