ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Samford University baseball team's difficult beginning to its 2018 season continued Saturday as the Bulldogs were tasked with a matchup against the No. 15-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on the second day of action at the UCF Tournament being held at John Euliano Park. Samford registered 10 hits in the contest, but ultimately fell, 10-4, to the Cavaliers.

The Bulldogs'
Branden Fryman turned in a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, while fellow-sophomores
Anthony Mulrine and
Taylor Garris both added two hits apiece. Mulrine, who is batting a sizzling .833 (5-of-6) from the dish this season, finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Garris blasted his first home run of the year Saturday in a 2-for-4 outing.

Samford (0-2) first baseman
Austin Edens, the Southern Conference's active career leader in home runs with 45, connected on his first round-tripper of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning, a two-run shot. He finished 1-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of RBI.

The Bulldogs' true freshmen
Brooks Carlson and
Max Pinto also added base hits in the contest.

Virginia (1-1) pounded out 14 hits Saturday, but needed four late runs in the ninth inning to up its final tally to 14. The Cavaliers' led 5-0 after five innings as
Derek Casey (1-0) earned a victory in his first start on the mound this season.

Samford's
Stephen Jones (0-1) was handed the loss. He allowed three earned runs in four innings and tallied a pair of strikeouts. The Bulldogs'
Hamp Skinner,
Tristan Widra,
Luke Corbin and
Carson Cupo all received action from the bullpen Saturday.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in on the field Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs close out play in the 2018 UCF Tournament versus the No. 22-ranked UCF Knights in another early-season matchup to be held at John Euliano Park.
