Softball Drops Two Games At Georgia Tournament Saturday

ATHENS, Ga. – The Samford softball team dropped a pair of games at the Red and Black Tournament, hosted by the University of Georgia Saturday. The Bulldogs fell to Winthrop, 6-0 Saturday morning, and then dropped a 10-2 decision to 17th-ranked Georgia in the afternoon.
 
In the loss to Winthrop, McKenna Gillespie (0-3) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three runs, just one earned, on three hits to take the loss. Annalyn Yantis pitched the final 4.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits.
 
Winthrop's Kiley Majette tossed a no-hitter for the Eagles, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing just one walk. Ansley Gilreath went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI to lead Winthrop at the plate. Ashley Westbrooks also homered for the Eagles, going 1-for-4 at the plate.
 
In the Georgia game, Madison Couch went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Samford. Hannah Trombley and Ashlyn Barnes had one hit each. Emily Barnett (0-1) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on three hits to take the loss.
 
For Georgia, Lauren Mathis (2-0) tossed 4.0 innings, giving up no runs on two hits to pick up the win. Justice Milz went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBI to lead Georgia at the plate.
 
With the losses, Samford drops to 0-8 on the season. Winthrop improves to 2-1, while Georgia is now 7-1.
 
Samford will wrap up the tournament with a pair of games on Sunday. The Bulldogs will take on Evansville at 9:30 a.m. (CT) and Winthrop at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
