ATHENS, Ga. – The Samford softball team plated 11 runs and pounded out 15 hits on its way to an 11-5 victory over Evansville Sunday morning in the Red and Black Tournament, hosted by the University of Georgia.
Shelby Maze went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
Madison Couch,
Kelsey Royalty,
Ashlyn Barnes and
Whitney Hinton had two hits each.
Kathryn Jackson drove in three runs in a 1-for-2 performance at the plate.
Annalyn Yantis (1-2) earned the win in the circle for Samford, pitching the final 4.0 innings, giving up just one run on six hits.
Taylor DeCelles started the game for Samford, tossing 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits.
For Evansville, McKenzie Johnson went 3-for-3 at the plate. Lindsay Renneisen had two hits. Brittany Hay homered and drove in three runs in a 1-for-5 performance at the plate. Emily Lockhart (0-3) took the loss for Evansville, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits.
Samford plated a run in the first inning and another in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. In the first inning, Couch was hit by a pitch and later scored on an Evansville error. In the second inning, Couch singled to drive in Barnes for a two-run Samford lead.
Evansville took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Samford, however, answered with three runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good at 5-4. Jackson drove in two runs and
Hannah Trombley drove in one to give the Bulldogs the lead.
Samford added a run in the fourth inning, another in the fifth and two more in the sixth to push its lead to 9-4. Royalty doubled to drive in Maze in the fourth inning. Barnes scored on a ground out by Jackson in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Trombley singled to drive in Maze for the first run. The second run of the sixth inning scored when Barnes singled to drive in Trombley.
After Evansville plated a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, Samford added two final runs in the top of the seventh to make the final score 11-5. Maze doubled to left-center field to drive in Jackson and
Lexie Higgins for the game's final two runs.
Samford improves to 1-8 with the win. Evansville falls to 2-5 with the loss.
