ATHENS, Ga. – The Samford softball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Winthrop Sunday in the final game of the Red and Black Tournament, hosted by the University of Georgia.
In the loss, Samford was led by
Hannah Trombley, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Shelby Maze,
Kelsey Royalty and
Ryan Brzozoski had two hits each.
Taylor DeCelles (0-3) pitched 1.1 innings, giving up four runs, just one earned on two hits.
For Winthrop, Madyson Watson went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Ansley Gilreath also went 2-for-3 for the Eagles. Watson (1-1) also pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits to pick up the win in the circle.
Winthrop jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning. After Samford plated a run in the bottom of the third, Winthrop added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to make the score 6-1.
Samford came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-2. Winthrop added one final run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 7-2.
With the loss, Samford falls to 1-9 on the season. Winthrop improves to 4-1 with the win.
Samford will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 21, when the Bulldogs host in-state rival Troy. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Samford Softball Stadium. Admission to the game is FREE.
