Softball Falls In Tight Contest To Troy, 9-6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford softball team dropped a 9-6 decision to in-state rival Troy in the Bulldogs' home opener Wednesday evening at the Samford Softball Stadium.
 
For Samford in the game, Hannah Trombley went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Ryan Brzozoski went 2-for-4 as well. Whitney Hinton drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance with a double at the plate.
 
Taylor DeCelles (0-4) pitched 4.2 innings in relief to take the loss in the circle for the Bulldogs. Annalyn Yantis and McKenna Gillespie also pitched in the game for Samford.
 
As a team, Samford collected seven hits, to 11 for Troy. The Bulldogs committed four errors in the contest, while the Trojans had two errors.
 
For Troy, Stephanie Snyder went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Logan Calhoun and Bailey Taylor went 2-for-4 with an RBI each. Claire Graves (3-2) tossed 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits to pick up the win for the Trojans.
 
Both teams plated a run in the first inning, but Troy added four runs, just two earned, in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. Samford, however, answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Troy lead to 5-4. Two of Samford's three runs in the third inning came on a two-run home run by Trombley.
 
After Troy pushed its lead to 6-4 with a run in the top of the fourth inning, Samford plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the score at 6-6. Hinton doubled down the left-field line to drive in Kelsey Royalty and Madison Couch.
 
Troy took the lead for good with a run in the top of the fifth inning. The Trojans added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 9-6.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 1-10 on the season. Troy improves to 6-3 with the win.
 
Samford will host the Samford Invitational this weekend. The schedule has changed due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday. Samford will play twice Friday, taking on Indiana at 3:30 p.m. and Lipscomb at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Samford will take on Lipscomb at 11 a.m. and Indiana at 3:30 p.m.
