BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team earned a 6-1 victory over Indiana and dropped a 4-1 decision to Lipscomb on the first day of the Samford Invitational Friday at the Samford Softball Stadium.
In the win over Indiana,
Lexie Higgins went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate for Samford.
Hannah Trombley drove in two runs in a 1-for-2 performance.
Kelsey Royalty also drove in a run for Samford in the win.
Taylor DeCelles (1-4) picked up the win in the circle for Samford. DeCelles pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up just one run on seven hits for the Bulldogs.
For Indiana, Rebecca Blitz went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Makayla Ferrari also had two hits for the Hoosiers. Josie Wood (1-3) took the loss in the circle, tossing 5.0 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits.
Samford jumped on top early with two runs in the second inning.
Whitney Hinton singled to right field to lead off the inning. She later scored from third base on a double steal for the game's first run. Higgins later scored when
Madison Couch reached base on an error for a 2-0 Samford lead.
The Bulldogs broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning to push their lead to 6-0. Two runs scored on a Royalty single, and the other two scored on a Trombley single, giving Samford a six-run advantage.
Indiana plated its lone run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 6-1.
In the loss to Lipscomb, Trombley went 2-for-3 at the plate. Ryan Brzozski drove in a run, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
McKenna Gillespie (0-4) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up four runs, just three earned on 10 hits to take the loss.
Lipscomb was led by Abby Fenichel, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Hannah Devault was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Sarah Higgins drove in two runs, going 1-for-4 at the plate. Megan Gray (2-0) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits to pick up the victory.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings. Lipscomb plated three runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Bisons stretched their lead to 4-0 with a run in the top of the seventh inning, and Samford plated its run in the bottom of the seventh, making the final score 4-1.
With the split, Samford is now 2-11 on the season. Indiana moves to 1-10, while Lipscomb improves to 7-2.
Samford will take on Lipscomb Saturday at 11 a.m. Lipscomb and Indiana will then play at 1:30 p.m., and Samford will meet Indiana in the final game of the tournament at 3:30 p.m. Admission to all games is FREE.
