BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University track and field teams continued to excel in their 2018 indoor season Friday as the Bulldogs registered three event winners and nine top-3 finishes at the Samford Invitational held at the CrossPlex.
Against some of the top competitors in the Southeast, Samford's student-athletes continued to shine in just their fourth meet of the 2018 campaign.
The Bulldogs' men's team earned a third-place finish, while the Samford women placed fourth. On the men's side, Arkansas State looked strong with a total of 165.5 points. USF then finished second with a mark of 85, while the Bulldogs garnered third place with a tally of 72 points.
The Samford women finished in fourth place in the competition with 66.5 points and trailed just USF (115), South Alabama (93) and Arkansas State (80) in the final standings.
The Bulldogs' top finishers Friday were Emmanuel Tait, Haley Ward and the women's 4x400 relay team. All three of the aforementioned competitors placed first in their respective events.
Tait, Samford's All-Southern Conference sophomore from Alabaster, rolled to a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. He posted a brilliant time of 7.98 in the competition, while teammate Jack McHugh placed fifth at 8.38.
In the 3,000-meter run, the Bulldogs' Ward turned in a time of 9:49.04 to win the event. She bested conference-foe Reilly Caldwell from Furman by over six seconds. Additionally, Samford's true freshman Allie Nelson registered a time of 10:16.40 to claim third place in the competition.
Samford's women's 4x400 relay team edged out Arkansas State's squad to win the event by just 18 one-hundredths of a second. The Bulldogs' group posted a time of 3:49.73, while ASU's team finished in 3:49.91.
Also on Friday, Samford's Tait placed second in the 60-meter dash, Erin Hines took second place in the long jump and Megan Meadow notched a second-place performance in the triple jump. The Bulldogs' Dillon Dean also finished second in the mile, while teammates Paul Richardson and Ben Bryant placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Samford's Noah Osburne, only a freshman, tallied a third-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 12.63 meters.
The Bulldogs' Camille Caldwell and Keyth Fightmaster garnered fourth-place performances, while Matt Cahoon and Josh Salter finished fifth in their events Friday.
The Samford University track and field team will next be in action Saturday as the Bulldogs continue competing in the Birmingham CrossPlex, this time in the 2018 Samford Open.
