Softball Comes Up Short, 4-1 To Fordham At Easton Crimson Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –
The Samford softball team wrapped up the second day of the Easton Crimson Classic with a 4-1 loss to Fordham Saturday evening at Rhoads Stadium.
 
Shelby Maze led Samford at the plate, going 2-for-4. Ashlyn Barnes drove in Samford's lone run of the game with a single in the top of the fifth inning. Annalyn Yantis (2-5) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
 
For Fordham, Paige Rauch drove in two runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Madi Shaw and Lauren Quense drove in a run each for the Rams. Quense was also the winning pitcher for Fordham. She tossed 5.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits. Rauch picked up the save, throwing 2.0 innings, allowing no runs on just one hit.
 
Fordham plated a run in the first inning and another in the third to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Samford then answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Samford's fifth-inning run scored when Barnes singled up the middle to drive in Kelsey Royalty.
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the game was delayed for 90 minutes due to inclement weather in the area. After play resumed, both teams went scoreless until Fordham added two final runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 4-1.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 5-19 on the season. Fordham improves to 6-13 with the win.
 
Samford will take on 13th-ranked Alabama Sunday in the final game of the Easton Crimson Classic. That game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start, and the contest can be seen live online on the SEC Network+.
