BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team swept a doubleheader, with a pair of 7-0 wins over the University of Alabama in Huntsville Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
"We did a good job today," Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail said. "Everyone got the opportunity to compete and get better.
Austin Heinz did a good job of closing out our seventh point in the second match, and the rest of the team had to work hard on their respective courts."
In the first match, Samford swept the three doubles matches for the first point of the match. At No. 1 doubles,
Jake Faundez and
Eduardo Lourido defeated Dylan Hall and Timo Christen, 7-5. At No. 2 doubles,
Rossouw Norval and
Justin Ghavami earned a 7-5 win over James Caddies and Noah Pring. On the No. 3 doubles court,
Aleksandar Petrovic and
Hugo Moreira defeated Rodrigo Palomino and Elliot Hopson, 6-1.
In singles, Samford won each match in straight sets. At No. 1 singles, Faundez defeated Christen, 6-3, 6-4. On the No. 2 singles court, Lourido defeated Hopson, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Norval earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hall.
At No. 4 singles, Petrovic defeated Tim Nutz, 6-2, 6-2. Moreira defeated Caddies, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, while
Max Rebol earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kieran Roskell-Thomas at No. 6 singles.
In the second match, Samford won the first two doubles matches, with Faundez and Lourido defeating Hall and Christen, 6-4 at No. 1, and Norval and Ghavami defeating Guilherme Coleta and Roskell-Thomas, 6-4, on the No. 2 doubles court. The match at No. 3 doubles was not finished.
Samford again swept the six singles matches in straight sets. Faundez defeated Hall, 6-0, 7-6 at No. 1 singles. On the No. 2 singles court, Ghavami defeated Christen, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Norval earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nutz.
At No. 4 singles, Petrovic defeated Pring, 6-1, 6-1. On the No. 5 singles court, Rebol defeated Caddies, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 6 singles,
Austin Heinz defeated Palomino, 6-4, 6-4.
With the sweep, Samford improves to 8-7. UAH falls to 5-8 with the losses.
Samford will return to action on Friday, March 23, when the Bulldogs host Mercer. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Samford Tennis Center.
