BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University track and field teams will compete in their first meet of the 2018 outdoor season Friday as the Bulldogs are hosting the Samford Alabama Track Challenge at the Samford Track and Soccer Complex. The one-day, five-team event will feature some of the best track and field athletes, not only in Alabama, but also in the nation.
The field events are slated to begin at noon (CT), while the running competitions are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
The men's teams competing in Friday's event will be Samford, Alabama, South Alabama and Troy. The women's side will include the aforementioned squads, as well as Miles College.
Competing for Samford in the men's competition will be the following student-athletes: Marquis Barnes, Matthew Cahoon, Brad Cheek, Hugh Duggan, Austin Eck, Keyth Fightmaster, Warren Fitzpatrick, Gavin Gautreau, Carson Howe, Pierce Jackson, Sam Katulich, Jack McHugh, Michael McMahan, Will Nichols, Payne Norton, Tray Oates, Jordan Oballe, Noah Osborne, Thomas Ozburn Jr., Hunter Poole, Michael Rohdy, Josh Salter, Hunter Schlatter, Emmanuel Tait and Jonathan Waarvik.
The following Samford women will also be competing Friday: Lauren Beard, Hannah Belcher, Berkley Bryan, Camille Caldwell, Rachel Dixon, Amanda Dumar, Jayme Claire Eubanks, Lauren Granier, Erin Hines, Allison Holland, Maggie Johnston, Charlotte Krause, Sarah Lee, Veronica Lyle, Tonia McKinley, Megan Meadow, Elizabeth Miles, Carrie Neill, Bekah Pfitzer, Selena Popp, Megan Roach, Sarah Sanford, Tatiana Taylor, Lauren Torsch and Tally Wilson.
The Samford track and field programs enters the 2018 outdoor season with a tremendous amount of momentum.
Less than two weeks ago, Samford's Oates earned All-America status for a second straight year with an eighth-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 5.50 meters at the NCAA National Championships held at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
Oates' finishes capped off a brilliant performance from the Samford men's and women's track and field teams in the indoor season. Earlier this year, the Bulldog women earned their third straight Southern Conference championship, while the men's squad finished second.
BULLDOGS ALSO HEAD TO MISSISSIPPI STATE THIS WEEKEND
Many members of the Samford track and field team will also be competing in the 2018 Al Schmidt/Bulldog Relays at Mississippi State University this weekend. The event will begin Friday at 11 a.m. (CT), but most of Samford's student-athletes will be competing Saturday.
The participating schools in the two-day event are the following: Men - - Alabama-Huntsville, Alcorn State, Arkansas State, Grambling State, Lane College, Lemoyne-Owen, Memphis, Meridian CC, Mississippi Valley State, Mobile, Rust College, Samford, Southeast Missouri State and UNO.
Women - - Alabama-Huntsville, Alcorn State, Arkansas State, Jackson State, Lane College, Memphis, Meridian CC, Mississippi Valley State, Missouri State, Mobile, Rust College, Samford, Southeast Missouri State, Tennessee Tech, UAB, UNO and West Alabama.
The multiple Samford competitors in this weekend's Bulldog Relays will be the following: Barnes, Beard, Cahoon, Caldwell, Dumar, Eck, Fightmaster, Fitzpatrick, Hines, Johnston, Krause, McHugh, McKinley, McMahan, Meadow, Neill, Oballe, Osborne, Ozburn Jr., Popp, Schlatter, Sanford, Taylor, Waarvik and Wicks, as well as the men's 4x100-meter relay squad.
