STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Samford track and field teams competed in the highly-acclaimed 2018 Al Schmidt/Bulldog Relays hosted by Mississippi State University on Saturday and the Bulldogs' Sarah Sanford, Matt Cahoon, Maggie Johnston, Keyth Fightmaster and Selena Popp all earned top-five performances at the early-season event held at the Mike Sanders Track Complex.
Sanford registered Samford's best finish Saturday as the Bulldogs' junior placed second in the 400-meter hurdles. Sanford, a native of Hoover, Alabama, turned in a time of 1:00.96 in the event and finished slightly behind first-place Monica Mosley of Mississippi State, who notched a 1:00.08.
In the men's discus competition, Samford's Cahoon earned third place with a throw of 49.94 meters. Cahoon nearly claimed second place in the event, but Zach Hancock of Alabama-Huntsville barely edged him out with a toss of 50.17.
The Bulldogs also performed well in the women's discus event Saturday. Johnston, Samford's talented native of Macon, Georgia, finished fifth in the competition after registering a throw of 48.80 meters.
Samford's final two top-five finishers both competed in the high jump.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs' Fightmaster placed fifth by achieving a height of 2.05 meters in the event, while Popp, Samford's recent indoor national championship competitor, also finished fifth with a tally of 1.60 meters.
The Samford University track and field teams will next be in action Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, as the Bulldogs are slated to compete in both the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida, here in the early portion of the 2018 outdoor season.
