BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team pounded out 12 hits and used a trio of stellar pitching performances to defeat the ETSU Buccaneers, 6-2, on Saturday in a Southern Conference contest held at Joe Lee Griffin Field. With their key win, the Bulldogs evened the SoCon series at one victory apiece.
Â
Samford (11-13, 1-1 SoCon) scored early and often Saturday and garnered a 5-0 lead over
ETSU (12-7, 1-1 SoCon) heading into the sixth inning.
Â
The Bulldogs' talented true freshman pitcher
Samuel Strickland (3-0) started the game and limited the Buccaneers to four total hits in 6.1 innings of action. ETSU was held scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Cullen Smith and Chris Cook both singled in runs. The scores would prove to be the Buccaneers' only tallies of the game.
Â
Samford scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings and then used a two-run homer from true freshman
Max Pinto in the bottom of the fifth frame to extend its advantage to 5-0. Pinto's blast proved to be the first round-tripper of his up-and-coming collegiate career.
Â
Pinto finished 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
Â
The Bulldogs'
Austin Edens, the school's all-time home run hitter and the nation's active career leader in the category, crushed the 47
th homer of his illustrious career Saturday. Edens blast occurred in the fourth inning and easily cleared the left-field wall despite a 17-mile per hour headwind.
Â
Sophomore
Branden Fryman, who led off for Samford for the second time of his career Saturday, set the table for the Bulldogs with a 4-for-5 performance at the dish. He also scored a pair of runs and tallied an RBI on a second-inning single to right field.
Â
Samford's
Brooks Carlson turned in a solid day at the plate with two hits and an RBI, while
Troy Dixon,
Anthony Mulrine,
Ayrton Schafer and
Taylor Garris also added key base hits.
Â
The Bulldogs'
Josh Rich and
Erin Baldwin both pitched well in relief Saturday. Rich didn't allow a run in two-thirds of an inning, while Baldwin closed out the victory by striking out four and only allowing a single hit in two frames.
Â
ETSU's
Ryan Simpler (2-3) earned the start on the mound and was issued the loss. He allowed five earned runs on nine hits, but registered eight strikeouts.
Â
