BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned a 6-1 non-conference victory over Eastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
"We did a good job today of taking care of business on the singles courts," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "We did well across the board, but our freshmen did a good job of getting off to good starts and getting us a couple of quick wins."
 
Samford grabbed an early lead by earning the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts. At No. 1 doubles, Jake Faundez and Eduardo Lourido defeated Ramon van Flymen and Parth Aggarwal, 6-2. On the No. 2 doubles court, Rossouw Norval and Aleksandar Petrovic earned a 7-6 win over Guillem Sanchis and Carlos Dodero.
 
In singles, Eastern Kentucky took the win on the No. 1 court, but Samford came back to earn victories at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to pull away for the 6-1 win.
 
At No. 2 singles, Justin Ghavami defeated Aggarwal, 6-4, 6-4. On the No. 3 singles court, Lourido defeated Sanchis, 6-3, 7-6. At the No. 4 position, Norval earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Gabriel Ruiz.
 
At No. 5 singles, Petrovic defeated Dodero, 6-1, 6-4. On the No. 6 singles court, Max Rebol defeated Juan Soria, 6-2, 6-4.
 
"We need to keep focusing on the process of getting better and doing the things we need to do to get better," Esmail said. "Focusing in practice on what we need to work on and then implementing it is a goal of ours. We're looking forward to our matches next weekend."
 
With the win, Samford improves to 5-5 on the season. Eastern Kentucky falls to 4-11 with the loss.
 
Samford will return to action on Sunday, March 11, when the Bulldogs play at Charlotte. The match is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (CT) start from Charlotte, N.C.
