Softball To Host SoCon Series With Western Carolina This Weekend

GAME NOTES

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford softball team will host a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend with Western Carolina at the Samford Softball Field.

The teams are set to play a doubleheader Saturday, and one game Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., will now start at 11 a.m., due to expected inclement weather. Sunday's game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.

Samford enters the weekend with a record of 12-29 overall and 2-3 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs dropped three games at the University of Texas last weekend. Samford fell by scores of 15-2, 1-0 and 4-0.

For Samford this season, senior center fielder Shelby Maze leads the team with a .390 batting average with three doubles, one triple, six RBI and a team-high 25 runs scored. Hannah Trombley is hitting .291 with four home runs and a team-high 22 RBI. Whitney Hinton leads the team in home runs with five.

Maze enters the weekend with 273 career hits, just one short of tying the school record of 274 set by current assistant coach Megan Dowdy (2013-16). Maze has already set the career records for runs scored (139) and batting average (.388). Junior left fielder Kelsey Royalty is nearing a single-season school record. Royalty has 16 stolen bases this season, and the single-season record is 22, shared by Dowdy and Maze.

In the circle, McKenna Gillespie has a team-best 4.00 ERA, to go along with her 3-7 record. Taylor DeCelles leads the team in wins with a 5-11 record and a 5.98 ERA, while Annalyn Yantis has a mark of 3-10, to go along with her 4.94 ERA.

Western Carolina is currently 9-24 overall and 0-6 in league play. The Catamounts dropped a 7-3 decision at Charlotte Wednesday evening.

Samford and Western Carolina have met 29 previous times, with WCU holding a 15-14 lead in the series. Last season, Samford lost two of the three games in the series played in Cullowhee, N.C. Samford won the middle game, 7-4, but fell in the first and third games by scores of 5-1 and 8-6.
