Softball Wins Game Two, 7-3 To Earn Doubleheader Split At Mercer

MACON, Ga. –
The Samford softball team earned a 7-3 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Mercer to earn a split with the Bears. Mercer took the first game of the twin bill by a score of 6-5.
 
In the game two win, Shelby Maze went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI to lead Samford at plate. The triple was the 10th of her career, tying the Samford career record in the category. Maze also extended her hitting streak to 15 games, tied for the longest of her career.
 
Whitney Hinton went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Kathryn Jackson also homered in the win for Samford, driving in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance. Ashlyn Barnes also drove in a run in the win for Samford.
 
Taylor DeCelles (7-12) pitched 5.0 innings in relief, giving up no runs on three hits, and striking out four batters without allowing a walk to earn the win in the circle for Samford. Annalyn Yantis started the game, tossing 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
 
Mercer was led in the second game by Shaila Warren with a solo home run in a 1-for3 outing at the plate. Stella Preston (10-4) took the loss for the Bears, pitching 4.0 innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits.
 
After Samford grabbed an early lead with a run in the top of the third inning, Mercer came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
 
Samford, however, came right back with four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 advantage. Hinton led the inning off with a solo home run to get the rally started. Maze later tripled to drive in Mekhi Mayfield and Madison Couch. The final run of the inning came when Barnes singled to drive in Maze.
 
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fifth inning to push their lead to 7-3. Jackson homered to right-center field with Couch on base for the game's final two runs.
 
In the first game, Lexie Higgins went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Barnes went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Maze and Kelsey Royalty added two hits each. McKenna Gillespie (3-8) pitched the complete 6.0 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits to take the loss.
 
For Mercer in game one, Quirisa Mauga went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Emma Andrew and Allie Jones drove in two runs each. Preston earned the win, tossing 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit.
 
Samford got off to a hot start in game one, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. After Mercer plated its first run in the bottom of the first, Samford added a run in the top of the third inning to push its lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the third inning, Mercer plated five runs to take the lead for good at 6-4. Samford came back with a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 6-5. Neither team could score the rest of the way and the game ended in a one-run Mercer victory.
 
With the split, Samford's record moves to 16-32 overall and 5-5 in Southern Conference play. Mercer is now 29-14 overall and 8-2 in league games.
 
The teams will conclude the series with a single game Sunday. The game's start time has been moved up to 10 a.m. (CT) due to expected inclement weather in the Macon area. Links to follow Sunday's game are below.
