Big Hits Lift Softball In Game Two Of DH Split At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. –
The Samford softball team split its Southern Conference doubleheader at Furman Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs pounded out 13 runs in 11 hits in a 13-5 victory in game two of the twin bill. Samford fell in the first game, 7-0.
 
In the game two win, Lexie Higgins hit a grand slam, going 1-for-3 with four RBI. Shelby Maze and Ashlyn Barnes had three hits each, with Barnes driving in two runs and Maze driving in one. Kelsey Royalty went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Ryan Brzozoski drove in three runs in a 1-for-3 performance.
 
Taylor DeCelles (8-12) earned the win in the circle for Samford. She pitched 6.0 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Emily Barnett pitched the final inning, without allowing a hit to close out the game.
 
For Furman in the second game, Lindsey Bert, AnnaRose Borelli, Hannah Reynolds, Emily DeMonte and Cammy Pereira drove in a run each for the Paladins. DeMonte (13-2) took the loss for Furman, pitching 7.0 innings and giving up 13 runs on 11 hits.
 
Samford jumped on top first with a run in the top of the first inning. Furman took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Bulldogs then took the lead back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run double by Royalty. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Furman added a run to knot the score at 3-3.
 
Samford took the lead for good at 6-3 with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs added four more in the top of the sixth inning on Higgins' grand slam to push their lead to 10-3.
 
Furman came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Samford lead to 10-5. The Bulldogs, however plated three final runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 13-5.
 
In the first game of the doubleheader, Barnes had Samford's lone hit, going 1-for-2 at the plate. McKenna Gillespie (3-9) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up six runs, just one earned, on four hits, to take the loss in the circle for Samford. Annalyn Yantis pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up just one run on one hit.
 
Furman was led in the first game by Caroline Cash with a double and three RBI. Casey Bigham drove in two runs for the Paladins. Bert (22-8) pitched all 7.0 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 13 batters to pick up the win in the circle for Furman.
 
Furman put up a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Paladins took control of the game with five unearned runs, thanks to a pair of Samford errors, to push their lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning. Furman added one final run in the sixth inning to make the final score 7-0.
 
With the split, Samford's record moves to 17-33 overall and 6-6 in Southern Conference play. Furman is now 35-12 overall and 7-5 in SoCon games.
 
The teams will conclude the series with a single game Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. (CT). Links to follow Sunday's game are below.
