Softball Drops Two At Texas Saturday

AUSTIN, Texas. –
The Samford softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Texas Saturday at McCombs Field. The Bulldogs dropped the first game, 15-2 in five inning, and then fell in a pitcher's duel, 1-0, in game two.

For Samford in game one, Hannah Trombley went 2-for-3 to lead the team at the plate. Shelby Maze and Lauren Lewis drove in a run each for the Bulldogs. Taylor DeCelles (5-11) pitched 0.2 innings, giving up seven runs on two hits to take the loss in the circle. Emily Barnett pitched 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits.

Texas was led by Janae Jefferson, going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Paige von Sprecken drove in four runs, going 1-for-2 with a double. Kristen Clark (1-0) pitched 1.0 inning in relief without allowing a hit to earn the win in the circle.

The Longhorns jumped out to a big early lead with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Texas added three runs in the second inning to stretch the lead to 12-0.

Samford fought back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. The runs scored on a sacrifice fly by Lewis and an RBI single by Maze to make the score 12-2. Texas added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the game ended in a 15-2 Texas win in five innings.

In game two for Samford, Annalyn Yantis (3-9) pitched the complete 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs. Maze, Trombley and Kelsey Royalty had one hit each in the second game. With Maze's two hits on the day, she now has 272 for her Samford career, just two short of tying the school record of 274, set by current assistant coach Megan Dowdy (2013-16).

M.K. Tedder drove in Texas' lone run in game two, going 1-for-3 at the plate. The winning pitcher in game two was von Sprecken (9-5), pitching the complete 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits.

Texas plated the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Tedder doubled to left field to drive in von Sprecken for a 1-0 Longhorn lead. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, and Texas pulled out the 1-0 win.

With the losses, Samford falls to 12-28 on the season. Texas improves to 22-14 with the sweep.

Samford and Texas will wrap up the weekend series with a single game Sunday. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m.
