AUSTIN, Texas. – The Samford softball team fell in the team's series finale at Texas, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at McCombs Field.
Samford was led at the plate by
Lexie Higgins, going 2-for-3.
Shelby Maze also went 1-for-3 for the Bulldogs. Maze now has 273 career hits, just one behind the current school record of 274, set by current Samford assistant coach
Megan Dowdy (2013-16).
Annalyn Yantis (3-10) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up four runs, just three earned, on four hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
Taylor DeCelles pitched the final 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits.
For Texas, Taylor Ellsworth went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Paige von Sprecken went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and one RBI. Brooke Bolinger (9-5) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing just one hit to earn the win the circle for the Longhorns.
Texas jumped on top early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, with two of those runs coming off a home run by Ellsworth. The Longhorns added another run in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by von Sprecken to push the Texas lead to 4-0.
Samford placed runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Bulldogs, however, were unable to push a run across and the game ended in a 4-0 loss.
With the loss, Samford falls to 12-29 on the season. Texas improves to 23-14 with the victory.
Samford will host Western Carolina in a Southern Conference series April 14-15. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
