BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team notched a critical Southern Conference series win Sunday against the Wofford Terriers as the Bulldogs claimed a 5-4 home victory in the rubber game of the weekend held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the win,
Samford (27-22, 12-6 SoCon) regained sole possession of second place in the conference standings. The Bulldogs also improved to 17-12 when playing at home this season.

Next up, Samford will travel to Western Carolina for a three-game series to be held in Cullowhee, North Carolina, beginning Friday.

Wofford (31-18, 11-7 SoCon) fell to 8-11 on the road this season and suffered its sixth one-run loss of the 2018 campaign. The Terriers will travel to VMI for a three-game set next week.

The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead Sunday as they jumped all over Wofford's starting pitcher
Scottie Wallace (0-3). Samford's
Branden Fryman and
Brooks Carlson both singled and scored in the inning, while
Anthony Mulrine ripped an RBI double to left field.

Carlson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored Sunday and finished the weekend series with a .455 batting average. The Bulldogs' talented true freshman also registered a .538 average last week, which included Samford's 7-5 home victory against UAB.

Ryan Crockett, the Bulldogs' right fielder, finished a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI on Sunday. Samford also received key base hits from
Max Pinto,
Connor Burns and
Austin Edens.

Wofford trimmed the Bulldogs' lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning, but Samford answered with runs in both the fourth and fifth framed to remain in the lead.

The Terriers would add a score in the sixth, but then
Wyatt Burns (4-3), the Bulldogs' All-SoCon reliever and Samford's all-time saves leader, notched the victory on the mound by keeping Wofford scoreless for the final three innings of action.

Samford's
Erin Baldwin started the game and didn't allow a run until the fourth inning. He pitched 4.2 frames for the Bulldogs.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel to Jacksonville State for their final nonconference game of the 2018 regular season, which will be held at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.
