Bulldog Bites: Volume 23

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford senior quarterback Devlin Hodges earned the top individual honor in all of FCS football to headline last week's Samford athletics news.
 
This week, both basketball teams will remain in action, and the track and field and men's tennis teams will begin their seasons as well.
 
FOOTBALL
Devlin Hodges was named the winner of the 2018 Walter Payton Award, the top individual award at the NCAA Division I-FCS level. Hodges edged out fellow quarterbacks Chandler Burks of Kennesaw State and Easton Stick of North Dakota State for the award.
 
For the season, Hodges passed for a school-record 4,283 yards. For his career, he set the all-time national FCS record for career passing yards with 14,584 yards in his four seasons in a Samford uniform.
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The men's basketball team dropped a pair of hard-fought road Southern Conference games last week. The Bulldogs fell at ETSU, 81-72 in overtime Thursday night. The team then dropped a 76-69 decision at Western Carolina Saturday afternoon.
 
This week, the Bulldogs play just once. The team will play at rival Chattanooga Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (CT) at UTC's McKenzie Arena. The team can be seen live on ESPN3. Links to follow the game are below.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The women's basketball team took last week off from competition.
 
The Bulldogs will play twice this week. Tuesday evening, the team will play at home for the first time in over a month when the Bulldogs host Montevallo at 6 p.m. (CT) in the Pete Hanna Center. Admission to the game is FREE! Saturday, Samford will open SoCon play with a 1 p.m. (CT) game at defending champion Mercer. Both games can be seen live on ESPN3. TRACK AND FIELD
The Samford track and field team will open its indoor season this week. The team will compete in the UAB Invitational Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. A full recap and results will be posted to www.samfordsports.com following the meet.
 
MEN'S TENNIS
The Samford men's tennis will open its spring season by taking on an SEC power this weekend. The team will play a doubleheader at Auburn Saturday.
