MARTIN, Tenn. – The Samford women's basketball team fell in a tough, hard-fought game at UT Martin, 80-75 in overtime Thursday night at Skyhawk Arena.
With the loss, Samford falls to 1-5. UT Martin improves to 1-3 with the win.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Charity Brown led Samford with 18 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.
- Sarah Myers also turned in a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
- Natalie Armstrong also scored 15 points, while Shauntai Battle added 10 points.
- UT Martin's Chelsey Perry led all scorers with 32 points.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Samford started the game hot, racing out to a 9-0 lead with 7:35 left in the first quarter after a layup by Armstrong.
- UT Martin fought back to cut the lead to three at 19-16, and Samford led, 23-18 at the end of the first quarter.
- Samford pushed its lead back out to nine points at 27-18 with 8:23 left in the second period after a three-pointer by Battle.
- UT Martin responded with an 11-2 run to tie the score at 29-29 with 5:22 left in the second quarter following a jumper by Perry.
- With the Skyhawks leading, 33-32, Samford scored the final six points of the quarter and the Bulldogs took a 38-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.
- After UT Martin tied the score at 38-38, Samford went on an 8-0 run to take a 46-38 lead with 6:00 to go in the third quarter after a jumper by Brown.
- Samford pushed its lead to 12 points at 56-44, and the Bulldogs held a 56-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.
- UT Martin opened the fourth quarter with an 11-3 run to cut the lead to 59-55 with 6:19 left after a three-pointer by Brittni Moore.
- The Skyhawks took the lead at 64-61 on a three-pointer by Moore, but Samford's Brown answered with a three-pointer to tie the score at 64-64 with 3:02 left.
- With the score tied at 67-67 in the closing seconds, neither team was able to score and the game headed to overtime.
- The lead went back-and-forth throughout the overtime.
- UT Martin took a 76-75 lead with 18 seconds left on a jumper by Perry.
- Samford was unable to retake the lead and UTM hit its free throws down the stretch to pull out the 80-75 win.
