Softball Swept In Doubleheader By UNA

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team was swept in a doubleheader by North Alabama in the team's home openers Wednesday afternoon at the Samford Softball Stadium. Samford dropped the games by scores of 5-1, in eight innings, and 7-3.
 
With the losses, Samford falls to 1-6 on the young season. North Alabama is now 5-0 so far this season.


 
GAME 1: UNA 5, SAMFORD 1 (8 inn.)
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • For Samford at the plate, Maddie Dorsett went 2-for-4.
  • Freshman Merritt Cahoon drove in Samford's lone run in a 1-for-3 performance.
  • Taylor DeCelles (0-3) pitched the complete 8.0 innings, allowing five runs, just four earned, on 10 hits in taking the loss in the circle for Samford.
  • Harley Stokes went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and four RBI to lead UNA.
  • Michelle Moore (1-0) pitched 3.1 innings in relief, allowing no runs on two hits to earn the win for the Lions.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fifth inning when Cahoon doubled to left-center field to drive in Kelsey Royalty for a 1-0 Samford lead.
  • North Alabama tied the score with a run in the sixth inning when Alex Brown doubled to drive in Lexie Harper, knotting the score at 1-1.
  • The score remained the same into extra innings until UNA broke out on top in the top of the eighth inning. Stokes hit a grand slam to center field to give UNA a 5-1 advantage.
 
GAME 2: UNA 7, SAMFORD 3

  • Timberlyn Shurbutt went 1-for-2 with a home run and one RBI to lead Samford in game two.
  • Ryan Brzozoski went 1-for-2 with a single and two RBI.
  • Lacey Spear (1-1) took the loss in the circle for Samford, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing three runs, just one earned, on two hits.
  • Stokes went 2-for-4 with two homers and two RBI to lead UNA once again at the plate.
  • Laken Distefano (2-0) tossed 2.2 innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits to earn the win for UNA.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • North Alabama jumped on top first in game two with three runs in the top of the second inning.
  • The Lions added a run in the third inning and another in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.
  • Samford got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth on Shurbutt's solo homer to left field to cut the lead to 5-1.
  • The Lions added a run in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to push their lead to 7-1.
  • Samford plated two final runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 7-3. Brzozoski singled up the middle to drive in Shurbutt and Whitney Hinton for the game's final two runs.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will host the Samford Classic this weekend at the Samford Softball Stadium. The event will take place Friday through Sunday, and Samford will be joined in the tournament by Georgia State, DePaul and Eastern Illinois.
