BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford senior infielder
Madison Couch homered twice as the Samford softball team earned a 6-0 win over previously undefeated DePaul Friday night on the first day of the Samford Classic at the Samford Softball Stadium.
With the win, Samford improves to 2-6 on the young season, while DePaul falls to 6-1 with the loss. Samford's second game of the night against Georgia State was canceled due to inclement weather in the area.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Couch went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI to lead the Bulldogs at the plate.
- The performance marked Couch's second career two-homer game, as she belted two home runs vs. Western Carolina last season.
- Timberlyn Shurbutt and Hannah Trombley each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
- Maddie Dorsett also had two hits, and scored three runs for Samford.
- Lacey Spear (2-1) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits to pick up the win in the circle for Samford. Taylor DeCelles pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit to close the game out.
- For DePaul, Maranda Gutierrez went 2-for-4 to lead the Blue Demons at the plate.
- Krista Dalgarn (2-1) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits to take the loss in the circle for DePaul.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning when Trombley singled to drive in Couch for a 1-0 Samford lead.
- The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third inning to push their lead to 3-0. Dorsett reached on an infield single and then scored on a pair of DePaul errors. Couch followed that up with a solo homer to left field for a three-run Samford lead.
- Samford added two more runs when Couch hit her second homer of the game, this one with Dorsett on base in the fourth inning for a 5-0 Bulldog lead.
- The Bulldogs put up the final run of the contest in the sixth inning when Shurbutt singled to right field to drive in Dorsett for a 6-0 Samford advantage.

Samford will continue play in the Samford Classic Saturday. Samford will take on DePaul again at 11:30 a.m., and then the Bulldogs will play Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. at the Samford Softball Stadium.
