BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team split two games at the Samford Classic Saturday at the Samford Softball Stadium. The Bulldogs dropped their first game of the day to DePaul, 5-2, but then came back to take a 7-4 win over Eastern Illinois.
With the split, Samford is now 3-7 on the season. DePaul has a record of 8-1, while Eastern Illinois is 3-6.
GAME 1: DEPAUL 5, SAMFORD 2

- Whitney Hinton and Mekhi Mayfield had two hits each to lead Samford at the plate.
- Maddie Dorsett and Ashlyn Barnes drove in a run each for Samford.
- Taylor DeCelles (0-4) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits to take the loss.
- For DePaul, Morgan Greenwood went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Blue Demons at the plate.
- Natalie Halvorson (5-0) earned the win for DePaul, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.
SCORING SUMMARY
- DePaul jumped on top with three runs in the top of the first inning. Gabby O'Riley drove in two runs, while Maranda Gutierrez led the inning off with a solo homer for a 3-0 DePaul lead.
- DePaul made the score 4-0 with a score in the fifth inning when Greenwood homered to center field.
- Samford plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Barnes tripled to drive in Mayfield for the first run. Dorsett then singled to drive in Barnes to make the score 4-2.
- DePaul plated the game's final run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 5-2. Greenwood doubled to drive in Jessica Cothern for the game's final run.
GAME 2: SAMFORD 7, EASTERN ILLINOIS 4

- Whitney Hinton went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Madison Couch and Kelsey Royalty each had two hits and an RBI in the contest.
- McKenna Gillespie (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four runs, just three earned, on five hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford.
- For Eastern Illinois, Mady Poulter went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
- Jade Montgomery (0-3) tossed 5.0 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits to take the loss for the Panthers.
SCORING SUMMARY
- After Eastern Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Samford came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Dorsett scored on an EIU error, and Hinton drove in the other two runs for the Bulldogs in the inning.
- Each team plated a run in the third inning as Samford held a 4-2 advantage. Samford's run in the inning came when Royalty singled to right field to drive in Hinton.
- Samford added two runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to push its lead to 7-2. In the fourth inning, Hinton homered to left field with Timberlyn Shurbutt on base. In the fifth inning, Couch singled to left field to drive in Royalty for a five-run Samford lead.
- EIU plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 7-4.
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will conclude the Samford Classic on Sunday by taking on Georgia State in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start from the Samford Softball Stadium.
