Softball Earns 5-1 Win Over Georgia State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford softball team picked up a 5-1 win over Georgia State in the Samford Classic Sunday afternoon at the Samford Softball Stadium. The scheduled second game on Sunday was canceled due to inclement weather.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 4-7 on the young season. Georgia State falls to 1-9 with the loss.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Maddie Dorsett went 2-for-3 at the plate for Samford.
  • Hannah Trombley drove in two runs, while Madison Couch and Timberlyn Shurbutt drove in one run each.
  • Lacey Spear (3-1)  earned the win in the circle for Samford, pitching 2.0 innings in relief and giving up no runs on one hit.
  • McKenna Gillespie started the game and pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits. Emily Barnett closed out the game, tossing the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit.
  • For GSU, Baylee Sexton went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Remington Hasty drove in the Panthers' lone run.
  • Amanda Chance (0-5) took the loss for the Panthers, tossing 4.0 innings in relief and giving up four runs on five hits.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford jumped on top first with a run in the first inning. Shurbutt doubled to left-center field to drive in Couch for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
  • Georgia State tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the third inning. Hasty hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Sexton to knot the score.
  • Samford took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Trombley drove in two runs, while Couch drove in one to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.
  • The Bulldogs plated one final run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 5-1. Mekhi Mayfield scored the game's final run on a wild pitch.
 
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will return to action on Feb. 22-24, when the Bulldogs take part in the FSU Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.
