TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Samford softball team dropped a pair of games at the Unconquered Invitational, hosted by Florida State University Saturday. The Bulldogs fell to Elon, 8-2, and then to top-ranked Florida State, 13-0 in five innings.
 
With the losses, Samford falls to 5-10 so far this season. Elon has a record of 7-4, while Florida State's record improves to 15-0 with the win.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Kelsey Royalty went 2-for-3 at the plate for Samford.
  • Kathryn Jackson homered in a 1-for-3 performance.
  • Madison Couch also drove in a run for Samford.
  • Taylor DeCelles (0-5) took the loss for Samford, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up four runs, just one earned, on seven hits.
  • Kenna Quinn (3-2) picked up the win for the Phoenix, pitching the complete 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
  • Morgan Reich went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Elon at the plate.
  • Keagan Goldwait homered and drove in two runs in a 1-for-2 performance at the plate.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Elon took the lead with four runs, all with two outs, in the top of the third inning. Goldwait plated the first run with a solo home run. Rebecca Murray drove in two other runs in the inning, and Reich drove in one for a 4-0 Elon lead.
  • Samford came back with a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 4-1. Couch singled to left-center field to drive in Royalty to pull Samford to within three runs.
  • Elon added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Reich doubled to drive in Callie Horn for a 5-1 Elon lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jackson led the inning off with a home run to cut the Elon lead to 5-2.
  • The Phoenix plated three final runs in the top of the sixth inning to make the final score 8-2.

  • Timberlyn Shurbutt, Hannah Trombley, Whitney Hinton and Mekhi Mayfield had one hit each for Samford.
  • Annalyn Yantis (0-3) took the loss in the circle for Samford, pitching 0.2 innings and allowing seven runs on four hits.
  • Anna Shelnut and Cassidy Davis each homered in the game for Florida State.
  • Makinzy Herzog (1-0) earned the win for the Seminoles, tossing 3.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Florida State jumped out to an early lead with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Seminoles added a run in the second inning, two in the third and two more in the fourth to make the final score 13-0.
