Bulldogs Drop Two on Final Day at Cowgirl Classic

LAKE CHARLES, La. –
The Samford softball team fell in both games Saturday at the Cowgirl Classic, hosted by McNeese State. The Bulldogs' first game of the day was a defeat to Campbell, as Samford fell to the Camels 5-0. The Bulldogs took the field again to take on Arkansas and fell by a score of 6-1.
 
After both games, Samford is now 1-4 in the 2019 season. Campbell is now 1-2, while Arkansas is now 3-0.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Samford senior pitcher Annalyn Yantis (0-2) took the loss in the game. She pitched all 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and picking up five strikeouts.
  • Madison Couch got the Bulldogs' first hit of the day with a triple in the second inning.
  • Whitney Hinton and Timberlyn Shurbutt each also tallied a hit for the Bulldogs.
  • Megan Mozingo led Campbell at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base and two RBI.
  • Megan Richards (1-1) earned the victory for Campbell, tossing a complete game and allowing no runs on three hits.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Campbell opened up the scoring in the second inning off of Mozingo's triple as the Camels jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
  • Neither team would score again until the Camels broke it open in the sixth inning with four runs. Three from Campbell reached the plate due to an error and Campbell was able to take the winning 6-0 lead.
 
ARKANSAS 6, SAMFORD 1

  • Six different Bulldogs combined for seven hits. Third basemen Merritt Cahoon led the Bulldogs with two hits and a run scored.
  • Taylor DeCelles (0-2) pitched the complete 6.0 innings, allowing six runs, all earned, on 7 hits to take the loss.
  • Autum Storms (2-0) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up one run on seven hits to earn the win for the Razorbacks.
  • Shortstop Maggie Hicks went 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI to lead Arkansas at the plate.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Arkansas jumped on top first in the bottom of the first off a double from Ashley Diaz, which brought in Danie Gibson.
  • The bases were loaded when Linni Malkin was walked and brought in Katie Warrick to extend the lead for the Razorbacks to 2-0.
  • The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when Gibson scored again, on a solo home run to right.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Maggie Hicks drove in Rya Jackson on a single to left. Hanna McEwen drove in Hicks and Carl Haizlip to extend the Razorback lead to 6-0.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs tried to mount a comeback when Maddie Dorsett singled to the pitcher. Cahoon scored from third on the play to make the final score 6-1.

LOOKING AHEAD
