MURRAY, Ky. –
The Samford softball team split a pair of games at the Racer Classic, hosted by Murray State, Sunday. The Bulldogs defeated Fort Wayne, 5-2, and then fell to Murray State by a score of 4-1.
 
With the split, Samford's record moves to 8-16. Fort Wayne has a record of 5-9, while Murray State is currently ?-?.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Whitney Hinton went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Madison Couch went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Ashlyn Barnes went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
  • Taylor DeCelles (1-7) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to earn the win for Samford.
  • Emily Barnett picked up her second save of the season, tossing 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit.
  • Ashley Haas went 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI to lead Fort Wayne at the plate.
  • Lauren McConnell (3-3) pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits to take the loss for Fort Wayne.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford jumped on top first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Barnes tripled to center field to drive in Hinton for the game's first run.
  • The Bulldogs added three runs in the third inning on Hinton's three-run home run to left-center field to give Samford a 4-0 lead.
  • After Fort Wayne plated a run in the fifth inning and another in the sixth, Samford plated one final run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Couch singled to drive in Barnes to make the final scored 5-2.

  • McKenna Gillespie (2-2) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
  • Abby Shoulders drove in two runs, while Sierra Gilmore and Logan Braundmeier drove in one each for Murray State.
  • Taylor Makowski (1-0) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up one run on six hits to earn the win in the circle for the Racers.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Murray State plated two runs in the second inning to take an early lead. Shoulders doubled to left-center field to drive in Lexi Jones and Braundmeier to give the Racers a 2-0 lead.
  • The Racers added a run in the third inning to push their lead to 3-0. Gilmore hit a solo home run to left-center field for a three-run Murray State lead.
  • Samford came back with a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Shurbutt doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch to bring Samford to within two runs.
  • Murray State added one final run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 4-1. Braundmeier singled to drive in Lindsey Carroll for the game's final run.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will continue play in the Racer Classic Monday. The Bulldogs will take on Northern Iowa at 11:15 a.m., and Murray State again at 3:45 p.m.
