Softball Downs Northern Iowa, Falls At Murray State Monday

MURRAY, Ky. –
The Samford softball team earned a 6-5, nine-inning win over Northern Iowa, and then fell at Murray State by a score of 5-1 on the final day of the Racer Classic Monday.
 
With the split, Samford now has a record of 9-17. Northern Iowa has a mark of 9-9, while Murray State is currently 9-11.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Whitney Hinton led Samford at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
  • Hannah Trombley went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Taylor DeCelles (2-7) earned the win in the circle for Samford, pitching 6.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs on five hits and recording three strikeouts.
  • Brittney Krodinger led UNI at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
  • Erica Oler (2-2) took the loss for Northern Iowa, giving up one run in 2.0 innings of work.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford jumped on top early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hinton singled to drive in Madison Couch for the game's first run. Hinton later scored on a single by Ashlyn Barnes for a 2-0 Samford lead.
  • The Bulldogs added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 4-0 Samford lead. Trombley singled to drive in Ryan Brzozoski, and Maddie Dorsett later scored on a sacrifice fly by Hinton for a four-run Samford lead.
  • Northern Iowa came back with three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.
  • Samford tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mekhi Mayfield doubled to right field to drive in Hinton to knot the score at 5-5.
  • The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning when Merritt Cahoon scored from third base when Couch reached base on an error to give Samford the 6-5 walk-off win.

  • Ryan Brzozoski led Samford, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Lacey Spear (4-4) pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three runs on two hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
  • Murray State was led by Sierra Gilmore, who homered and drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance at the plate.
  • Hannah James (5-5) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits to earn the win for the Racers.
  • Amber Van Duyse picked up her first save of the season by pitching the final 2.0 hitless innings.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Murray State took a 2-0 lead when Gilmore hit a two-run home run to left-center field in the bottom of the second inning.
  • The Racers added a run in the third inning and another in the fourth to push their lead to 4-0.
  • Samford got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Brzozoski singled to drive in Mekhi Mayfield to cut the MSU lead to 4-1.
  • Murray State added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 5-1.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
