GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford softball team split its Southern Conference-opening doubleheader at UNCG Saturday afternoon. Samford dropped the first game, 9-0 in five innings, but came back to take game two by a score of 5-2.
The win in game two gave head coach Mandy Burford her 198
th career win at Samford, tying her with Beanie Ketcham for the most wins in program history. Samford's season record improves to 12-22 overall and 1-1 in SoCon play. UNCG is now 17-11 overall and 1-1 in league contests.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Timberlyn Shurbutt went 1-for-2 to lead Samford at the plate.
- Taylor DeCelles (2-9) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up nine runs on 10 hits to take the loss.
- For UNCG, Marisa Sholtes went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
- Stephanie Bryden (12-5) pitched the complete 5.0 innings, giving up no runs on one hit to earn the win.

- Whitney Hinton went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
- Annalyn Yantis (2-5) pitched the complete 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford.
- Makenna Matthijs homered in a 1-for-4 performance with one RBI for UNCG.
- Kylie Bouplon (4-4) took the loss for UNCG, tossing 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford jumped on top first with a run in the top of the second inning. Kathryn Jackson scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Samford lead.
- In the third inning, Hinton hit a two-run homer to push Samford's lead to 3-0.
- After UNCG plated two runs in the bottom of the third, Samford came back with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Mayfield hit a two-run homer to left field to make the final score 5-2.
