GREENSBORO, N.C. – Samford head softball coach
Mandy Burford-Johnson became the program's all-time winningest coach when the Bulldogs earned a 7-4 win at UNCG Sunday afternoon.
Burford-Johnson now has 199 career wins, breaking the old record of 198 set by Beanie Ketcham from 2003 to 2010. For the season, Samford improves to 13-22 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. UNCG falls to 17-12 overall and 1-2 in league play.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Madison Couch, Merritt Cahoon and Mekhi Mayfield each homered in the game to lead Samford to the win.
- Hannah Trombley also drove in a run for Samford.
- McKenna Gillespie (4-3) pitched 3.2 innings in relief, giving up no runs on two hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford.
- UNCG was led by Marisa Sholtes and Gabi Howard with a home run each.
- Stephanie Bryden (12-6) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up seven runs on six hits to take the loss for the Spartans.
SCORING SUMMARY
- UNCG got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sholtes hit a solo homer to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
- Samford took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the top of the second inning on a two-run home run by Cahoon.
- The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the third inning to push their lead to 3-1. Mayfield homered to left field to give Samford a two-run lead.
- In the bottom of the third inning, UNCG plated another run to cut the Samford lead to 3-2. Delaney Cumbie singled up the middle to drive in Melanie Darges to bring UNCG to within one run.
- UNCG took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Howard hit a two-run home run to left field to give the Spartans the lead.
- Samford answered with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Trombley singled to drive in Couch for the first run of the inning. Ashlyn Barnes scored the second run on a sacrifice fly by Mayfield. Timberlyn Shurbutt then singled to drive in Amanda Briskin for the final run of the inning.
- Samford added a run in the top of the seventh inning when Couch homered to push the Samford lead to 7-4.
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will host Furman for a three-game Southern Conference series next weekend at the Samford Softball Stadium. The teams are set to play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
