BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Furman in the final game of a three-game series at the Samford Softball Stadium Sunday.
With the loss, Samford falls to 15-23 overall and 4-2 in Southern Conference play. Furman improves to 10-22 overall and 2-4 in league games. Samford wins the series from Furman, two games to one.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Timberlyn Shurbutt went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI for Samford.
- Whitney Hinton also homered for Samford, going 1-for-3 with one RBI.
- Hannah Trombley went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Madison Couch also had two hits for Samford.
- Annalyn Yantis (3-6) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits to take the loss for Samford.
- Marissa Guimbarda went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead Furman at the plate.
- Natalie Morgan also homered for the Paladins, going 1-for-4 with one RBI.
- Mackensie Greico (2-9) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits to earn the win in the circle for the Paladins.
SCORING SUMMARY
- After Furman jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Samford came back to tie the score at 1-1 when Shurbutt scored on a sacrifice fly by Trombley.
- Furman added four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. Morgan hit a solo home run, and Guimbarda hit a three-run shot for a four-run Furman lead.
- Samford answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 5-3. Shurbutt homered to left field for the first run of the inning. Trombley later singled to drive in Hinton to bring Samford to within two runs.
- In the top of the fifth inning, Guimbarda homered to right-center field to push the Paladins' lead to 6-3.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Hinton hit a home run to left field to cut the Furman lead to 6-4.

Samford will host Belmont in a midweek game Wednesday. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start from the Samford Softball Stadium.
