BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team staged a late comeback, but fell just short in a 7-6 loss to Belmont Wednesday evening at the Samford Softball Stadium.
With the loss, Samford falls to 15-14. Belmont improves to 20-15 with the win.

- Mekhi Mayfield went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Maddie Dorsett went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs.
- Lacey Spear (4-5) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up six runs, just four earned, on eight hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
- Hayley Baker went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead Belmont at the plate.
- Audrey Lyle went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.
- Brittany Kennett (2-2) pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six runs on six hits to earn the win for the Bruins.
- Alicia Veltri picked up her first save of the season, pitching the final 1.2 innings.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Belmont scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
- The Bruins added three runs in the fourth inning to push their lead to 6-0.
- Belmont plated another run in the fifth inning to make the score 7-0.
- Samford came back with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Belmont lead to 7-6. Mayfield drove in two runs, Amanda Briskin, Merritt Cahoon and Madison Couch drove in one run each, while Grayson King scored on a wild pitch as Samford closed to within one run.

Samford will travel to Western Carolina for a three-game SoCon series this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT), and a single game Sunday, also at 12 p.m. (CT).
