Baseball Picks Up Seventh-Straight Win, 8-3, Over Alabama State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team continued its hot streak with an 8-3 win over Alabama State Wednesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
The win was Samford's seventh straight victory this season, and the Bulldogs improve to 9-3. Alabama State falls to 7-5 with the loss.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Anthony Mulrine went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Preston Moore went 2-for-4 with two doubles as well, while Taylor Garris drove in two runs with a double in a 1-for-4 performance.
  • Carson Cupo (1-0) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up no runs on two hits to earn the win.
  • For Alabama State, Cameron Hearn went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Alexander Castro (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Alabama State, tossing 4.0 innings, giving up six runs on six hits.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The teams were scoreless for the first two innings until Samford plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Garris drove in two runs, while Mulrine and Branden Fryman drove in one run each as the Bulldogs grabbed a 4-0 lead.
  • After Alabama State scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning, Samford added two more in the bottom of the fourth to push its lead to 6-2. Sam Teague and Max Pinto drove in a run each in the inning for Samford.
  • Samford added a run in the fifth inning and another in the seventh, while Alabama State plated a run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 8-3.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will play host to Kennesaw State in a three-game series this weekend. The teams are set to play Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
