Hinton Powers Softball To Doubleheader Sweep Of ETSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Samford junior second baseman Whitney Hinton hit a combined three home runs and drove in a combined eight runs as the Bulldog softball team swept a doubleheader from ETSU Friday night at the Samford Softball Stadium. Samford won the games by scores of 7-5 and 8-0 in six innings.
 
With the sweep, Samford improves to 19-25 overall and 8-3 in Southern Conference play. ETSU falls to 17-18-2 overall and 3-5 in league play.


 
GAME 1: SAMFORD 7, ETSU 5
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • In game one, Hinton went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Kathryn Jackson went 1-for-3 with a walk-off three-run home run for the Bulldogs.
  • Annalyn Yantis (4-7) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford.
  • For ETSU, Nikki Grupp hit a three-run home run in a 1-for-2 performance in the first game.
  • Taylor Boling (7-7) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits to take the loss for the Bucs.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hinton hit a three-run home run to left-center field to give the Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead.
  • ETSU came back with four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-3 lead. Jordan Durbin scored on a wild pitch, and Grupp hit a three-run home run to give the Bucs the lead.
  • Samford tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but ETSU took the lead again at 5-4 with a run in the top of the seventh.
  • With two outs and two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, Jackson hit a home run to right field to give Samford the 7-5 walk-off win.

  • Hinton went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and four RBI to lead Samford again in game two.
  • Kelsey Royalty went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Taylor DeCelles (6-9) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up no runs on five hits to earn the victory for Samford.
  • Durbin and Kylie Toler each went 2-for-3 to lead ETSU in the second game.
  • Kelly Schmidt (7-8) tossed 4.0 innings, giving up six runs on five hits to take the loss for ETSU.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Hinton hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Samford an early 3-0 lead.
  • In the second inning, Royalty hit a two-run homer, and Hannah Trombley had an RBI single as Samford pushed its lead to 6-0.
  • The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth inning to make the score 7-0. Jackson singled to drive in Hinton for a seven-run Samford lead.
  • In the sixth inning, Hinton doubled to drive in Royalty to end the game at 8-0.

Samford and ETSU will conclude their series with a single game Saturday. The contest is set for a 12 p.m. start from the Samford Softball Stadium.
