Softball Splits Doubleheader At Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. –
The Samford softball team split its doubleheader at Western Carolina Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs dropped the first game, 9-4, but came back to take game two by a score of 9-3.
 
With the split, Samford has a record of 16-25 overall and 5-3 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina has a record of 14-22 overall and 2-6 in league play.
 
GAME 1: WCU 9, Samford 4
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Hannah Trombley hit a two-run home run, and Whitney Hinton hit a solo shot for Samford.
  • Merritt Cahoon went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Bulldogs at the plate.
  • Madison Couch went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Samford.
  • Annalyn Yantis (3-7) pitched 3.1 innings giving up six runs on five hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Western Carolina jumped on top with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ashlyn Long walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Catamount lead.
  • The Catamounts added three runs in the bottom of the third inning on a three-run home run by Shaina Reed for a 4-0 WCU lead.
  • Samford put its first run on the scoreboard when Hinton hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-1.
  • Western Carolina answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 6-1. Kayla Brewer hit a two-run home run to left field for a five-run WCU lead.
  • The Catamounts added another two-run home run by Reed in the bottom of the fifth inning to push their lead to 8-1.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, Samford plated three more runs to cut the WCU lead to 8-4. The first two runs came on a two-run home run by Trombley. The final run was scored when Cahoon singled to drive in Couch.
  • The Catamounts plated another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a home run by Long for a 9-4 WCU lead.
 
GAME 2: Samford 9, WCU 3

  • Merritt Cahoon went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Whitney Hinton homered and drove in two runs in the win.
  • Maddie Dorsett went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Taylor DeCelles (4-9) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up three runs, just two earned, on 10 hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Western Carolina jumped out to an early lead again in game two with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Bailey Huneycutt scored on a wild pitch to give the Catamounts a 1-0 lead.
  • WCU pushed its lead to 2-0 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Samford took control of the game with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning. The first two runs scored on a Whitney Hinton home run. Maddie Dorsett and Merritt Cahoon drove in a run each, while Cahoon scored on an error and Hannah Trombley scored on a wild pitch as Samford took a 7-2 lead.
  • The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to push their lead to 9-2. Cahoon hit a two-run single to give Samford a seven-run lead.
  • Western Carolina added one final run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 9-3.

Samford and Western Carolina will conclude their series with a single game Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT) in Cullowhee, N.C.
