BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team fell at home to Jacksonville State, 11-5, Tuesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the loss, Samford falls to 33-13 on the season. Jacksonville State improves to 24-20 with the win.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Ayrton Schafer went 3-for-4 at the plate for Samford.
- Branden Fryman, Anthony Mulrine, Taylor Garris and Max Pinto drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.
- Hamp Skinner (0-2) pitched 1.2 innings, giving up five runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
- Tre Kirklin led Jacksonville State, going 3-for-6 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
- Nic Gaddis and Alex Strachan also homered for the Gamecocks.
- Michael Gilliland (2-1) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs on two hits to earn the win for the Gamecocks.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Jacksonville State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a three-run home run by Gaddis.
- The Gamecocks added two runs in the second inning to push their lead to 5-0.
- Samford plated two runs in the second inning and another in the third to cut the JSU lead to 5-3. In the second inning, Pinto and Fryman drove in a run each. In the third inning, Garris walked with the bases loaded to drive in Mulrine.
- Jacksonville State added two runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh to push its lead to 11-3.
- Samford plated two final runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 11-5. Mulrine drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Jordan Fucci scored on a wild pitch to close out the scoring.
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will travel to Macon, Ga., for a three-game Southern Conference series at Mercer this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
