Bulldog Bites: Volume 39

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The women's outdoor track and field team won the Southern Conference Championship, while the men's team finished second at the meet, hosted by Samford, to highlight last week's action.
 
This week, baseball and softball will both host home midweek games, but will go on the road this weekend for key Southern Conference series.
 
SAMSPY AWARDS
Monday night, the Athletics Department held its 11th-annual SAMSPY Awards to honor the school's student-athletes, coaches and support staff. A total of 21 awards were given out during the night.
 
The highest honors of the night were the Mr. and Miss Bulldog awards. This year's Miss Bulldog was Madison Couch of softball, and the Mr. Bulldog award went to Kyle Stuart from the baseball team. For a recap of the night, click on the link below.

BASEBALL
The Samford baseball team posted a record of 4-1 last week. The team earned midweek wins over Alabama A&M (4-2) and Troy (4-3). Samford then traveled to Spartanburg, S.C., for a key SoCon series at second-place Wofford. The Bulldogs extended their SoCon lead by winning two-of-three games in the series. The team is off to the best start in program history with a 33-12 overall record and a 13-2 SoCon mark.
 
This week, the team will host in-state rival Jacksonville State Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs will then play a three-game SoCon series at Mercer. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT). Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT). For links to follow all of the action, click on the link below.

SOFTBALL
The Samford softball team took the last week off from action. The Bulldogs enter the final week of the regular season in a tie with UNCG for first place in the SoCon standings with a 10-4 league record.
 
The Bulldogs will host cross-town rival UAB for the team's final home game Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the Samford Softball Stadium. The game will be the team's Teal Game to show support for those battling ovarian cancer. Also, the first 75 fans at the game will get free Taco Mama. This weekend the Bulldogs will wrap up their regular season with a three-game series at Chattanooga. The teams are scheduled to play a single game Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT), and a doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT). For links to follow all of the action, click on the link below.

TRACK & FIELD
The Samford Track and Field teams hosted the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, last weekend at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium. The women's team won the league title, while the men's team finished second. Between the men's and women's teams, Samford won a total of 12 events in the meet.
 
This Saturday, the Bulldogs will compete in the Tennessee Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn. Full results will be posted to www.samfordsports.com following the completion of the meet.
